ウミガメへの餌やり体験で手にかみつかれ指を切断したのは、水族館が安全への配慮を怠ったことが原因として、堺市の60代の女性が高知市の桂浜水族館を運営する社団法人を相手取り、治療費や慰謝料など約1390万円の支払いを求める損害賠償請求訴訟を、大阪地裁堺支部に起こしたことが分かった。

訴状などによると、女性は09年8月、高知市内を友人3人と旅行中に水族館を訪れ、ウミガメの水槽を見ていると、職員から餌やり体験を勧められた。女性は水槽の縁から割りばしで餌のキビナゴを与えていたところ、突然水面から大きく伸び上がったウミガメに右手をかまれ、小指の先を切断する重傷を負ったという。

女性は水槽の縁には高さ約30センチの柵しかなく、餌の与え方の説明やウミガメの危険性を警告する案内、注意書きも十分に設置されていなかったと指摘し、水族館が入館者の安全に配慮する義務を怠ったと主張している。

桂浜水族館は1931年創立。水族館によると、ウミガメの餌やり体験は古くから実施しており、事故後も継続している。ホームページでは「他の水族館では体験できない、当館の特徴的なコーナー」と紹介している。永国雅彦館長は「当館でこのような事故は初めて。安全柵の設置や『注意』と書いた張り紙などの対策を取っていたが、結果的にけがをされたことは申し訳なく思っている。訴訟については弁護士に一任している」と話している。

Best India Food Inflation Climbs to Three-Week High on Fruits, Onions


India’s food inflation accelerated to a three-week high, adding pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates next week.

An index measuring wholesale prices of agricultural products rose 8.76 percent in the week ended April 16 from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said in a statement in New Delhi today. The gain in the previous week was 8.74 percent.

The Reserve Bank of India may boost rates for the third time in 2011 in the May 3 policy announcement, economists said. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Standard Chartered Plc and Barclays Plc raised their forecast for rate increases this year after benchmark wholesale-price inflation accelerated to 8.98 percent last month, stoked by food and manufactured products. --- read more

China farmers face 'exploding' watermelon problem

Farmers in eastern China have been left perplexed after their watermelons began to explode one by one.

An investigation by state media found farms in Jiangsu province were losing acres of fruit because of the problem. The overuse of a chemical that helps fruit grow faster was blamed in one report by China Central Television.

But agriculture experts were unable to explain why chemical-free melons were exploding. They cited the weather and abnormal size of the melon as factors.

Coca-Cola Co and PepsiCo Inc have settled a trademark lawsuit over the latter's packaging for its Trop50 line of fruit juices. US District Judge Sim Lake dismissed Coca-Cola's lawsuit in an order issued Thursday, after both companies in court papers said "all matters in dispute in this case have been fully and finally resolved." Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which help protect the skin from cell damage.
Eat a rainbow of foods everyday. Many of the benefits can be found in the actual colour pigments.

All fats are not made equal, especially when it comes to promoting great skin. The right fats form a barrier to prevent harmful invaders penetrating the skin. The stronger this barrier the more moisture can be held by our skin cells thereby keeping them nice and plump!
Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids will promote healthy skin membranes.
Good sources of omega 3 are oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, herring and salmon. Omega 6 can be found in sunflower and pumpkin seeds, flaxseed and sunflower oils or corn oil. All in small quantities of course!

Oolong tea means ‘black dragon tea’ and is one of the most highly consumed teas served in traditional Chinese restaurants. It is available from most Chinese supermarkets. Oolong tea is made from the same plant from which green tea is processed, but oolong tea is more oxidised than green tea.
